Pelican Paschal Candle
Pelican Paschal Candle
Please read this page before proceeding with your purchase.
This is an original design, hand-painted with acrylic paints on a 51% beeswax candle. For centuries, the Pelican has been depicted in Catholic art as a symbol of the Eucharist and Christ’s sacrificial love for us. How perfect, since the Paschal Candle itself represents the Light of Christ entering a world darkened by sin.
The legend of the Pelican first appears in the Physiologus - a 2nd century collection of stories which connect observations of the natural world to our Catholic Faith. One of the most enduring is the Pelican which seemed to wound itself and feed its baby chicks with its own blood. Ever since, the image of the Pelican has been used as a symbol of Christ in Catholic churches, manuscripts, and artwork all over the world.
Incense grains will be provided with the candle.
Breakdown of Cost:
- The base price (to cover the labor) of the Pelican candle is $200. It takes approximately 7 hours to paint.
- The price of the blank candle is included in this price, since I have to purchase it from a manufacturer. The price ranges from $37 (for the 1-1/2" x 34") to $240 (for the 3"x 60."

Our Paschal Candle this year looks wonderful. We choose a rather simple design, but the painted candle is a nice change from the normal wax designs you see from large companies. A bonus is the paint does not leave marks on anything that touches it like many more common wax designs.
